The Floating Palace On River Pichola

As if rising out of legend, Lake Palace dominates the center of Lake Pichola. The palace is one of India's most famous and luxurious hotels. It was built in the middle of the 18th century by prince Maharana Jagat Singh II as a summer palace, where he famously entertained many guests and lovers. The palace was built on a natural rock foundation on the Jag Niwas Island. When the tide is low, the island can be seen. When it is high, the palace seems to be floating on the water.

After 2 centuries of serving as a private resort for the descendants of the prince, a place for them to experience ultimate luxury, the palace was converted into a luxury hotel in the 1960s. Today, guests are invited to enjoy the lavish interior and the royal butler service that are remanants of a long gone era. Even the shuttle service by luxury boat adds to the experience. It has 83 rooms and suites, all renovated with wooden forniture, silk upholsteries and a luxurious design.

Making of Mangalyaan, First Indian Mars Mission

India is aiming to follow the Soviet Union, United States and Europe in having a successful visit to Mars. Mangalyaan, which means "Mars craft" in Hindi, must travel 780 million kilometres over 300 days to reach an orbit around the red planet next September. Hundreds of people watched the rocket carrying the Mars spacecraft take off from the east-coast island of Shriharikota and streak across the sky. The total cost of the project is 450 crores, one sixth of the cost of a Mars probe set to be launched by NASA in 13 days.

Mission Facts:

• The 1,337 kg Mars Orbiter Satellite will be put into a 250 km X 23,500 km elliptical orbit.
• The launch vehicle being used is a PSLV-C25.
• This is the 25th mission of PSLV and fifth in the XL configuration.
• Time from launch to injection of the Orbiter into its trajectory is about 40 minutes.
• The cost of the mission is approximately Rs. 450 crore.
• With this mission, India will be the first Asian country and the fourth in the world to take part in interplanetary exploration.

The outstanding performance of India managed to notch up a high viewership of 16 million people across the country, for the closing ceremony of the CWG 2010 on Thursday.This compares well with the reach numbers of 17 million who watched the closing of Beijing Olympics in 2008. 19th Commonwealth Games which begins today, started off with the opening ceremony last night at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in New Delhi. A near-capacity 60,000 crowd enjoyed the spectacle which, as its centrepiece, featured an illuminated ‘Aerostat’. Nagada drummers beat out the countdown to the opening accompanied by traditional Shankha trumpeters as the stadium lights were dimmed and the "Aerostat", a reportedly nine-million-dollar (400-million-rupee) white helium-filled balloon, rose 25 meters above ground level.Hundreds of thousands of residents of the Indian capital lined the streets, with a global television audience of more than a billion watching the two-and-a-half-hour event which heralds 11 days of competition.

How can a single stone of 81.5 tonnes intalled at the top tower?

Architectural studies show that a larger forecourt measuring 241 by 121 meters was specially designed to spatially hold the tower. The court was made of two equal square parts and the vimana was placed at the centre of the rear square. This provided the necessary foreground to view the elegance of the tower in full.

If the vimana was exceptional, the gopuras or gateways of this temple are milestones in architecture history. Rajarajesvaram was‘the greatest single step forward' in the development of gopuras in South India. Their axial placement frames the view of the vimana impressively and visually anchors the visitor. Though many structures and shrines were added to Rajarajesvaram till 19th century, they have not fortunately cluttered the complex and the original design intent can still be appreciated.

What is not well known, despite abundant inscriptions, are the names of the architects who designed it and the methods of construction adopted.
It is popularly believed that a linear ramp stretching seven kilometres was built and stones were hauled to the top. Few others suggest that short ramps around the tower were constructed. There is no final word yet on this.
