Volcano Destroyed Entire City

One fateful day a pleasant city nestled beneath a dormant volcano was completely destroyed when the volatile peak rumbled to life. Everyone knows the story of Pompeii in Italy, destroyed in AD 79 by Mount Vesuvius. But this was the city of Plymouth, Monserrat in 1995. On that fateful day, Soufriere Hills volcano which had lain dormant though out recorded history exploded in an eruption of titanic proportions that consumed Plymouth under 12 metres of mud and rendered the southern half of Montserrat uninhabitable. The eruption led more than half the population of Montserrat to flee abroad due to lack of housing and economic disruption.


In 1997, 19 people died after being overtaken by a pyroclastic flow following another eruption. Since then, the volcano's activities have been confined to venting ash into the unhabited southern region. Buried cars and houses visible on by their roofs are a common site today amid the ruins of Plymouth. Some images depicts the fateful day in AD 79 when Mount Vesuvius near Pompeii erupted. An ancient city completely destroyed, buried by more than 60 feet of ash and pumice and lost to civilisation for more than 1,500 years. Now, after its accidental discovery in 1592, Pompeii has become a world heritage site, excavated by archeologists to reveal many of the treasures of this ancient Roman city.

We yet don't know how exactly they were built and what was their main purpose and they still remain one of the most interesting things from humans past. Planning a wedding is a major undertaking for any couple, but not for Nisansala and Nalin from Sri Lanka who married this week at a Guinness World Record breaking ceremony near the capital city of Colombo.The bride and groom had a staggering 126 bridesmaids - easily beating the previous record of 96 held by a Thai couple - all dressed by Champi Siriwardana, who is one of Asia's leading wedding planners and dress designers.

It also didn't hurt that the guest of honour was Sri Lanka's First Lady, Shiranthi Rajapaksa. The spectacular ceremony was elaborately staged at the Avendra Gardens in Negombo, 30 kms from Colombo in front of hundreds of family and friends. All of the wedding party - bride, groom, 126 bridesmaids, 25 best men, 20 page boys and 23 flower girls - were dressed in richly embroidered traditional costumes in shades of purple and gold. The wedding breaks the previous world record, held by a wedding in Bangkok, Thailand, that included 96 bridesmaids. 'Breaking the Guinness world record is no mean feat and one that I cannot achieve alone,' said Champi.

Floating Village On Lake Titicaca

Just an ordinary day in the bed of grass floating on the lake Titicaca. Located at an altitude of 3812 meters in the Peruvian desert, here there are 40 floating islands. Originally created by the Uros people of Peru from Inca times, beautiful islands are used for refuge and shelter from the war that never stopped in their homeland. Made with carefully hand, this floating village composed of layers of thatch grass tortora who put together and tied to a floating base structure, such as pontoons. The result is like a giant raft, and great to be able to withstand heavy loads and large.

These islands are actually quite advanced and could be forced to be burdened but also must be repaired on a regular basis to maintain its strength. When the grass-thatched old started regardless of basic structure, weeds, new weeds replace the surface. Thatch grass are taken carefully from the edge of Lake Titicaca. These islands moored in place with ropes tied to wooden poles to the bottom of the lake.

World Largest Aquarium Tank - Kuroshio Sea

World's largest aquarium is located within the Ocean Expo Commemorative National Government Park in Okinawa, Japan. The main tank, called the Kuroshio Sea, holds 7,500 cubic metres (1,981,000 USgal) of water and features an acrylic glass panel measuring 8.2 by 22.5 metres (27 by 74 ft) with a thickness of 60 centimetres (24 in), the largest such panel in the world when the aquarium was opened.

13-year-old Xiao Xin puts on a show for his family, as he clips everyday items with his tongue. The young boy from Daqing, northeast China, was born with a snake-like tongue that branches out close to its tip, allowing him to use it as a tool for clipping various things. So far he hasn't found a proper use for it, apart from using it to entertain family and friends, but who knows when his snake tongue will come in handy. Making of Mangalyaan, First Indian Mars Mission

India is aiming to follow the Soviet Union, United States and Europe in having a successful visit to Mars. Mangalyaan, which means "Mars craft" in Hindi, must travel 780 million kilometres over 300 days to reach an orbit around the red planet next September. Hundreds of people watched the rocket carrying the Mars spacecraft take off from the east-coast island of Shriharikota and streak across the sky. The total cost of the project is 450 crores, one sixth of the cost of a Mars probe set to be launched by NASA in 13 days.

Mission Facts:

• The 1,337 kg Mars Orbiter Satellite will be put into a 250 km X 23,500 km elliptical orbit.
• The launch vehicle being used is a PSLV-C25.
• This is the 25th mission of PSLV and fifth in the XL configuration.
• Time from launch to injection of the Orbiter into its trajectory is about 40 minutes.
• The cost of the mission is approximately Rs. 450 crore.
• With this mission, India will be the first Asian country and the fourth in the world to take part in interplanetary exploration.

Xunantunich Mayan Temple

Xunantunich’s name means "Stone Woman" it is a combination of Mopan and Yucatec Maya, and, like many names given to Maya archaeological sites, is a modern name, the ancient name is currently unknown. The "Stone Woman" refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by several people to inhabit the site, beginning in 1892. She is dressed completely in white, and has fire-red glowing eyes. She generally appears in front of "El Castillo", ascends the stone stairs, and disappears into a stone wall.

This major ceremonial center can be reached by ferry daily and it is only 1.5 Kilometer (one mile) from some lovely rapids of the Mopan River. This Classic Period site provides an impressive view of the entire river valley. The site core occupies only 300 square meters but the periphery covers several square kilometers.

Strange Trees in Poland

In a tiny corner in north-west Poland near Gryfino, is a forest of about 400 pine trees that grow with a 90 degree bend at the base of their trunks, before rising vertically again. This collection of curved trees has been named the "Crooked Forest". The way the trunks are curved and all bent towards the same direction " northward â€" the cause of the curvature appear to be man made as opposed to natural.

The trees were allowed to grow for seven or ten years before being held down for a purpose unknown. The most intriguing explanation suggests that a group of farmers manipulated the trees after planting them in 1930. Apparently, the farmers hoped to make furniture from the bent shapes and intervene when the trees were only 10 years old. However, before they could be harvested, the outbreak of the Second World War interrupted the plans of whoever was growing and tending the grove, leaving their plans a mystery.
